- "Edna N. North, of Portsmouth, passed away peacefully in her home on Wednesday, December 28, 2016. Edna was born in Newport, RI, the daughter of the late Frank and Susan (Cardoza) Nunes. She was the wife of the late Arthur S. North. She was a graduate of the College of Mount St. Vincent in Bronx, New York, and later received her Master's from Rhode Island College. Edna was a teacher in the Portsmouth School District teaching art in the elementary schools for nearly thirty years until her retirement in 1993. She continued to preserve her passion for art, culture, and education by volunteering as a Docent at the RISD Museum in Providence, where she inspired others to appreciate art as well. Always wanting to learn more about other people and places, she travelled with Road Scholar to cities all over the world to experience their cultures firsthand. Some of the most wondrous areas she explored include China, Istanbul, Italy, and most recently, Spain. Additionally, she had an intense love for music and attended the Newport Music Festival every year. As an avid reader, Edna loved her book group and was always recommending her favorite books to close family and friends. Being a greatly spiritual person, Edna was a long time attendee of Portsmouth Abbey Church every Sunday morning. She devoted herself to the upkeep of her beautiful garden in the summertime between fun excursions to the beach. She cooked wonderful cookies, cakes, and jams which were famous to all who knew her. Edna walked regularly with her friends. Above all, she adored sharing her passions and spending time with her family and friends, especially her four granddaughters. Edna was an independent spirit and the epitome of living and loving life to the fullest as an educated, spiritual, loving, and inspiring woman. She is survived by four children, Christopher North of Hollywood, FL, Patricia Henningson of Northborough, MA, Stephanie North of Carlsbad, CA and Alison Scarpelli of Flemington, NJ; and her sons-in-law, John Henningson, Mark Cole, and Lou Scarpelli. She also leaves a sister, Anna Flaherty of Middletown, RI; and her granddaughters, Linnea Henningson, Natalie North-Cole, Vanessa Scarpelli, and Gabriela Scarpelli. She was preceded in death by a brother, Frank L. Nunes and a sister, Agnes Cayer. Calling hours will be Monday, January 2nd from 4:00-8:00 PM at Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, January 3rd at 9:00 AM from Connors Funeral Home, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.
