A family-directed celebration of life is scheduled for 11:00 am on Saturday, May 29, 2021 at the Nelson Community Center in Peever, SD.
She was born to Orlando and Charlotte Lohre on January 24, 1934 in Sisseton, South Dakota. She had two brothers, Gordon and Marvin. Dorothy attended 10 different schools in her 12 years of school. With her bright and outgoing personality, her friendships grew with every move; many which lasted a lifetime. After graduating from high school, Dorothy graduated from Beauty School in Long Beach, California. She married Stan Hortness on December 6, 1953 in Santa Ana, California. Together, they had six children; Chip, Steve, Janelle, Julie, and twins Lori and Jodi.
Dorothy was a faith filled woman who loved the Lord, her family, church, and friends. She especially loved the many activities at American Lutheran Church in Long Prairie, MN, entertaining guests in her home, baking, styling hair for friends, and time with her pool pals. She walked close to Jesus and was a witness to many souls.
Dorothy will be dearly missed by her loving husband of 67 years, Stan; children Chip (Cheri) Hortness of Sioux Falls, SD, Steve (Susan) Hortness of Little Falls, MN, Janelle (Jerry) Johnson of West Des Moines, IA, and Julie McKenzie (friend Rick) of Sioux Falls, SD; 11 grandchildren, Ashley (Adam) Nelson, Mitchel (Lindsey) McKenzie, Dane (Maggie) Hortness, Jessica (Reid) Schenk, Molly (Joe) Beck, Joshua (Staci) Johnson, Alexis (Joe) Millar, Christopher Hortness, Nathan (Amy) McKenzie, Jennifer Hortness and Michael McKenzie and 16 great grandchildren Graham, Audrey, Maysen, Wyatt, Kaylee, McKenzie, Dayton, Amos, Cooper, Oliver, Oakley, Taylor, Winston, Norah, Margot, Stanley and one more on the way; her brother Gordon (Sally) Lohre of Yucaipa, CA; and her many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
