- Mardell J. Peterson, 82, of Brookings, SD died Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at her residence under hospice care. Funeral Services have been set for 1:30pm, Friday, February 18, 2011 at Ascension Lutheran Church, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be from 4:00pm to 6:00pm Thursday, February 17, 2011 at Rudes Funeral Home, Brookings, SD.
Mardell J. Thompson was born on September 8, 1928 in Deuel County, South Dakota, the daughter of Einar and Selma (Westly) Thompson.
Mardell received her education in rural school in Brookings County and was a graduate of Brookings High School in 1946. She was united in marriage to Delbert Peterson on December 26, 1952 in Brookings. After their marriage, they lived in Minneapolis, MN for two years before moving back to Brookings, SD. They farmed in Brookings County for 25 years before retiring in 1979.
Mardell was employed for many years at the Brookings Telephone office and Brookings Monument.
She was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings, the Social Time Club, Whist Club, Saturday Morning Breakfast Club and she was a 4-H Leader. She enjoyed many good times playing cards, bowling and doing puzzles of all kinds.
She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother and she was always there for her family. She gave her family guidance and support over the years and she will be missed very much. Mardell especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was very proud of her family and she always looked out for them. Mardell was the first to step in and help her family whenever there was a need.
Mardell enjoyed working on crafts and needlework such as Hardanger, crocheting, knitting and needlepoint. She was self-taught and she made many beautiful pieces of Hardanger that were displayed in her home and given to friends and family as special gifts.
Mardell and Delbert enjoyed many car road trips around the U.S. She was a very organized planner and she kept notes and information on all of their travels. She was a great resource for others making vacation and travel plans.
She is survived by her husband, Delbert of Brookings; two daughters, Cindy Smith of Sioux Falls, SD and Diane Perry (Bryan) of Brookings, SD; three granddaughters, Abbey, Katrina and Jadyn; one sister, Marlene Clark of Brookings, SD and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mardell was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers Curtis and Marion." (med portrætfoto)
