Holocaust Survivor Meets Kin MIAMI BEACH (AP) - Nurse Susan Hartogsohn followed her curiosity after noticing how similar her name was to the spelling of Mount Sinai Hospital patient Rabbi Naphtoli Hartogson. Her interest led to a meeting between her father-in-law, Warren Hartogsohn, and the rabbi, who are cousins. The meeting on Sunday was their first since 57 years ago in Germany, before Hartogson was sent to the Buchenwald death camp. "I was really excited," the Montreal man said of the reunion. "They didn't expect anybody living still and I was of the same way of thinking. The old line is still alive." "I was very, very pleased," added Warren Hartogsohn. "It was such a terrific set of circumstances." Until Naphtoli Hartogson, 81, met Mrs. Hartogsohn, he thought he was the only member of his family to survive the Holocaust of Nazi Germany. Nurse Hartogsohn knew her name was unusual and wondered. "That's a very uncommon name. I thought it could be a relative, even if the name wasn't spelled the same," said Mrs. Hartogsohn, whose curiosity led her to confront the patient. "I sat down beside him and said, 'Mr. Hartogson, can you name some of your people?' He started naming all my father-in-law's relatives. I'm sitting there saying, 'Oh my goodness,'" she recalled. Hartogson was vacationing in Miami Beach when he developed an abscess on his leg and checked into Mount Sinai several days ago. The Hartogsohn family was from Emden, a West German town near the Netherlands border. In the late 1920s, about a year after Warren's birth, Hartogson said, Warren's parents moved to Hamburg. ; In 1938, Hartogson was arrested by the Gestapo and sent to Bucbenwald. "We were treated In the most unbelievable way," Hartogson said. "I was shocked." But the British consul in Frankfurt Interceded on his behalf, and about a month after arriving at the camp, Hartogson was expelled from Germany. He went to London, where he remained until 1940, when the British government sent him to Canada. At Canadian Immigration, he lost the second "h" in his name. Hartogson said he kept in touch with his four sisters, his brother and brother's wife, who remained in Germany. But in 1941, all six were rounded up and killed in a Nazi death camp, he said. v He said he had lost touch with the rest of his family. "I didn't know what happened to them," said Hartogson. "I was told one was on the last ship to America."
