    Nekrolog:
"SAN FRANCISCO -- No funeral services are planned for M.L. Bramson, the inventor of a heart-lung machine that has saved thousands of lives since it was introduced in 1971.
    Bramson died Thursday
    He was 85.
His body, a family spokesman said, will be cremated and his ashes scattered at sea.
Bramson was an engineer whose accomplishments included helping develop the world's first practical jet engine in England as well as devising machines that prolong human life.
His heart-lung machine revolutionized medical science in 1971 by keeping a 19-year-old patient alive for 75 hours after his aorta was ruptured in an automobile accident. The young man recoverd and became the first human to be kept alive by a machine for so long and then go on to lead a normal life.
Heart surgeons, who were previously hampered by conventional heart-lung machines that often complicated open-heart surgery, hailed Bramson's machine.
In 1962, Bramson received the American Medical Association's prestigious Hektoen Medal for inventing the world's first automatic heart massager in 1961.
He developed both machines while on the staff of San Francisco's Pacific Medical Center, where he worked until his retirement last year.
Bramson was born in Copenhagen, the son of English parents. He grew up in England graduated from London University with an engineering degree.
His long list of technical achievements began in 1936, when he helped in work that led to the development of the first practical jet engine.
He came to the United States in 1943 as an English representative on the Lend-Lease program.
Bramson is survived by his wife, Barbara, and three sons who live in England and Denmark." (UPI)
