    "Leonard M. Hoier, 80
    Former PVPA chairman
    Leonard M. Hoier, 80, of rural Herman died Sunday, July 4, 2010.
    Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, at Country Bible Church in Blair. Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Elkhorn.
    Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
    Leonard Melvin "Mel" Hoier was born Aug. 19, 1929, to Leonard C. and Nellie (Johnson) Hoier at their home in rural Kennard.
    He attended Mattes grade school through the 9th grade, and graduated from Elkhorn High School in 1946.
    He joined the U.S. Navy in 1949, and was later recalled to the Korean War. He served for three years.
    On April 19, 1950, he married Marjorie Ann Thomsen.
    Mr. Hoier worked with the Union Pacific Railroad until he went into farming in 1953. He served as the chairman of the Papio Valley Preservation Association, which helped defeat the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers when they were trying to build dams in the area in the 1970s and 1980s. He was a member of the American Legion and was past commander of Herman Legion Post 274. He was a member of the Herman Federated Church and Country Bible Church.
    He enjoyed spending time with his wife, family and many friends; helping his son, Jeff, on the farm; having coffee on the weekends with his daughter-in-law, Marj; and watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in all of their many activities.
    He is survived by his wife, Marge; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Marj; four grandchildren and their families, Abby and Jesse Sheets, Buck and Allie Hoier, Sherri and Lance Nozik and Dakota Hoier; great-grandchildren, Mylee and Maggie Sheets, and Laney and Charley Hoier; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Merritt Rosenbaum; brother-in-law, Bob Godbersen and wife; nieces, nephews and many close friends and family.
    He was preceded in death by three children, infants Melody and Danny, and son, Nick; and sister-in-law, Melva.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Herman Community Church and Herman Legion Post 274."
