Nekrolog:
KYNE, Stephen Edward-- A Veteran of World War II, Stephen E. Kyne served as an infantry captain in France. On D-Day 1944, he landed on Omaha Beach with the second wave, an experience he never forgot. People often asked, ""How did you make it through alive?"" Steve always answered, ""If I'd been in the first wave, I'd be dead. But I prayed a lot and the good Lord brought me through.""
Born in Casper, Wyoming, in 1918, Steve joked that he was a ""Wyoming cowboy"" who grew up on a ranch riding horses. At his graduation from the University of Wyoming and the advanced ROTC program, he also received his second lieutenant bars and induction papers into the Army.
After the war, Steve joined his family in California where he began a series of entrepreneurial careers that led to finance, construction, and management of mobile home parks.
He moved to Saratoga in the 1970's and became an active member of the Saratoga Rotary. His special interest was the Rotary Art Show held every year in May. One of his Rotarian friends often said, ""If I ever had to go to war, I would want to serve under your leadership, Steve."" In business as in war, Steve's leadership qualities were legendary.
About twenty years ago Steve retired. With his wife, Sheila, he traveled all over the world until Sheila died. Steve remarried a year and a half ago. Last April he learned that he had leukemia. Steve died on May 21 at the age of 83.
Steve is survived by his wife, Jan; his daughter Mary Larson, son-in-law Keith Larson, granddaughters Kim and Kate Larson, stepsons Greg and Richard Hayes, daughter-in-law Cecilia Hayes, grandson Mitchell Hayes, daughter-in-law Linda, granddaughter Jennifer Hayes, sister Shirley Rennard, brother William Kyne and sister-in-law Doris Kyne.
A Memorial Service will be conducted at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Saratoga, where Steve was a member, on June 1, 2002 at 3:30 p.m. by Rector Ernest Cockrell. Interment will be at the Madronia Cemetery in Saratoga. Donations in Steve's honor may be given to Innvision of Santa Clara Valley, 974 Willow St., San Jose, CA 95125, an organization that helps battered women and children.
