- "Linda Lee Johnson passed away on November 7 in Modesto, California. By her side was her loving husband of 45 years, Jim Johnson, and son, Craig Johnson. The family spent Linda's final moments together peacefully listening to her favorite Bach cello suites. Her greatest joy in life was her two grandchildren, Daniel and Clarisa Johnson.
Linda was born June 10, 1949 in Berkley, California and was an accomplished poet, musician and actor. Linda and Jim were married on June 20, 1970 in El Cerrito and moved to Modesto in 1971.
For over 30 years, Linda taught Music and the Humanities at Modesto Junior College. She had a private studio, providing piano instruction for hundreds of young students for many years. Her writings, music and poems have been published in various anthologies including More Than Soil, More Than Sky: The Modesto Poets. Linda used her writing to help people in need. For many years she taught the intensive journal writing program for women. As a young breast cancer survivor, Linda worked with the American Cancer Society to provide support to other young breast cancer victims.
She participated in a number of theater productions, including Sylvia, Children of the Dustbowl and Tomas and the Library Lady. Her favorite role was in Love Letters performed with her husband Jim. Linda was a member of the Poetry in the Schools Program for young students. She earned multiple academic degrees, including a Masters in English from California State University, Stanislaus and Piano Pedagogy from Holy Names University. Linda was an accomplished pianist who performed concerts at Modesto Junior College, Holy Names University and in churches throughout Stanislaus County.
Linda loved making personalized quilts and blankets, especially for friends with new born children. She served as president of the Stanislaus County Music Teachers Association and the California State Music Teachers Association. Linda was a strong believer in social justice and equality for all. Her volunteer work included serving as the program coordinator for the College Avenue Congregational Church's Interfaith Ministry and as a docent with the McHenry Mansion. Linda was an avid reader who participated in the Maven's book club for many years. Linda and Jim loved to travel and were fortunate to visit many countries in Europe. In Linda's final hours she told Jim that she thanked God for her life.
A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held on Saturday, November 28th at 2:00 pm at College Avenue Congregational Church, 1341 College Avenue, Modesto, CA...."
