- "Sioux Falls- Wallace Hortness, 78, died Friday, June 13, 2014, at Avera Dougherty Hospice House after a long hospital stay. A memorial service will begin at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls.
Wallace LeRoy Hortness was born September 6, 1935, in Sisseton, SD, to Holger and Efra Hortness of rural Peever, SD.
He was the youngest of seven children. He was a 1953 graduate of Peever High School and received his BA degree from Huron College in 1957. Wallace earned his Master's Degree from Northern State University. He and Maurine Dutcher were married on December 22, 1956.
Wally was a teacher/coach in Wolsey, DeSmet, and Veblen in SD, and in Corona, CA. He then spent two years as a high school principal in Bonesteel, SD and in 1980 became the principal at Parker High School retiring in 1999. He and Maurine moved from Parker to Sioux Falls in 2004.
Wally was an avid baseball fan. He played the game for many years, coached kids of all ages, and never gave up on his beloved Dodgers.
He is survived by his wife, Maurine and their five children: two girls, Mickie (Larry) Wiedenman, Rapid City, SD; Darci (Greg) Schjodt, Crooks, SD; and three boys, Douglas (LaVette) and their daughter, Jada, Sioux Falls, SD; Scott, Madison, SD; and Eric (Desiree and their children, Aspen and Ellis, Madison, SD.
Also two brothers: Stan (Dorothy) of Sauk Centre, MN and Delbert of Veblen, SD; plus many nieces and nephews. Wally was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers and a sister.
Wally's family asks that if you should choose to do so, please wear your favorite baseball jersey to his memorial service.
