- Alan Otto Frerichs passed away at home on Oct. 20, in Vacaville, at the age of 88. Alan was the oldest of four sons born to Johannes Heinrich (Hans) Frerichs and Anna Marie Frederiksen Frerichs. He was born at home on a farm near Superior, NE, in March 1927. Alan grew up on farms in the area of Mt. Clare, NE, and graduated from Nelson High School with the class of 1944. Alan kept in contact with many from the high school class, and attended many class reunions over the years.
Alan enlisted in the navy in 1945 near the end of World War II, and was stationed at Mare Island and Treasure Island Naval Bases in the San Francisco Bay Area. He was recalled to the Navy in 1951 and stationed at the Navy Submarine Base at Pearl Harbor, HI. Alan married Elizabeth Darleen (Pat) Patterson at the Methodist Church in Superior, NE, Sept. 14, 1950. They had nearly 51 years together. Except for their time in Hawaii, they lived in the areas of Sacramento and Carmichael, until moving to Vacaville in 1970.
Alan took great pride in his home and yard. He particularly loved to grow roses. While living in Carmichael, he belonged to the Sacramento Rose Society. Alan won many prizes for his roses at the annual Rose Society shows. Alan began his banking career at the Sacramento main branch of the Bank of America in 1948. Alan became Vice President of Operations at the Vacaville branch of Bank of America. Alan retired in 1984 after 36 years of service. After his banking career, he worked for Leo and Mark Nelson Construction for 14 years, a job that he enjoyed immensley. Alan was an excellent carpenter, gifted with a sense of how to build or repair almost anything. After moving to Vacaville, he was a member of the Kiwanis Club for several years. Alan joined the Covenant Community Church in 2001. He was active in the church, serving in several different areas. He did landscape maintenance, served as clerk of Session for 11 years, and also worked with Meals on Wheels, which was sponsored by the church for 14 years.
Alan was preceded in death by an infant sister, Margaret Ann, his parents, his beloved wife, Elizabeth, in July 2001, and his brother, Glen L. Frerichs. He is survivied by his son, Michael, and wife, Kenya, and daughter, Kathryn, and husband, David Ashby, who all live in Elk Grove. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Autumne Stroup, Scott Frerichs, Nathan Frerichs, and Mariah Frerichs, and two great-granddaughters, Hanna and Lauren. He is also survived by his brothers, Gene Frerichs, and wife, Twilla, and Robert Frerichs, and wife, Roberta, of Nebraska, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
Alan was a man who gave many the most precious gift of all, his time, and he asked for nothing in return.
A memorial service will be held at Covenant Community Church, 3870 Alamo Drive, in Vacaville, on Oct. 31, at 2 p.m. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Superior, NE, next to his wife at a later date. Vaca Hills Chapel is in charge of arrangements in Vacaville.
