He is survived by his daughters, Laura Petersen and Jennifer Petersen-Goldspiel, son-in-law, Joshua Goldspiel; son, Mark Petersen and daughter-in-law, Marcy Raybourn. He had six grandchildren, Ryan and Emily Ferrell, of Bloomington, Raleigh Thompson and Corey Petersen of Anthem, Arizona, and Brendan Goldspiel and Connor Goldspiel, of Bloomington. He also had one great-granddaughter, Sabryna Thompson, of Anthem, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents, Olaf and Katherine (Iversen) Petersen, who immigrated from Denmark.Paul was born in Chicago, Illinois, and lived most of his life in the Chicago area. He earned his undergraduate degree in musical composition and education. He loved classical music and was an avid pianist and composer throughout his life. He was also passionate about politics, and liked to share articles of interest with his friends. A self-made man, he also earned his PhD in psychology while working full-time to support his family. He established a successful private practice in Illinois and moved to Bloomington approximately seven years ago to be closer to his daughters and four of his six grandchildren. In Bloomington, he attended the Unitarian Universalist Church. He died peacefully at home in hospice care and will be missed by many. The family is planning a private remembrance service."
