She worked as a medical transcriptionist and then became supervisor of medical transcription at St. Joseph’s Hospital for 26 years. LaVerne was so respected that when she retired a doctor told her “They are going to have to close the hospital without her.” She laughed.
LaVerne had many interests and was constantly learning. She took writing, poetry, photography, and computer classes. She danced with the Hot Flashes, a tap-dancing group, in her late 60’s. When LaVerne was in her 70’s she wrote a children’s book, “If a Peacock Follows You Home, Stories by Grandma.” She wrote several stories including articles for Reminisce Magazine.
LaVerne was a loyal friend and would do anything for anyone. She loved throwing a party and having fun seeing other’s laugh. She was funny, smart, creative, curious, and always had a story to tell. She is preceded in death by her husband in 1977. As a single mother, LaVerne was a strong and determined role model. Family was the most important part of her life. When anyone in her family would say I love you she would say “I Love You More”. LaVerne is survived by her children Jana Engel (Don), Mark Olsen (Lilly), Erik Olsen, Beth Prellberg (Jeff), her 6 grandchildren Kyle (Stephanie), Ryan, Kristyn (Ashton), Matthew, Garrett, and Chad, and her 2 great grandchildren Decker and Emarie, also many nieces and nephews.
LaVerne was a very special person and will be missed. Her inspiration, love, and joy is her legacy. Here’s to you LaVerne for giving us so many “Precious Moments” (med foto).
