- "Else Marie Champion of Old Lyme, a former teacher in local schools, died Friday at Mariner Health Care at Bridebrook in Niantic. She was 94.
Mrs. Champion graduated from Willimantic Normal School and taught all nine grades in a one-room school in South Lyme. She then taught first and second grade at Center School in Old Lyme for many years.
Mrs. Champion was a member of the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme and was a deacon emeritus of the church. She led the Sunday school for more than 20 years.
She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Old Lyme, the Old Lyme Country Club and the Old Lyme League of Women Voters. She served on the board of directors of the Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library and the Old Lyme Visiting Nurse Association.
Mrs. Champion helped reactivate the Girl Scouts in Old Lyme after World War II. She was noted for her artwork, especially tole trays and velvet painting.
She was the widow of Clifford V. Champion and is survived by a daughter, Theodora C. Cooksley of Old Lyme; four grandchildren; and five great-grandsons."
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme. Burial will follow in Duck River Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
