- "LaVerne John Hoier, 82, of Sterling, died July 25, 2009, in Sterling. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, at Tennant Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 30, at the First Presbyterian Church in Sterling, with the Rev. Michelle Witherspoon officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery.
LaVerne was born Aug. 4, 1926, to Edward and Minnetta (Japp) Hoier in Arlington, Neb. He moved with his parents to Colorado in 1934 to a farm near Crook when he was 8 years old. They later moved to a farm near Padroni in 1939, when he was in the seventh grade. He attended Padroni School.
LaVerne was inducted into the U.S. Army during World War II when he was 18 years old. He served from Feb. 21, 1945, until Nov. 30, 1946. He served with the 343rd Infantry Regiment, 86th Infantry Division in Luzon, Phillippine Islands. When he returned from the Army, he farmed with his dad until he was married.
On Nov. 29, 1950, he married Phyllis Slater at the First Presbyterian Church in Sterling. They were married for 59 years.
They farmed northeast of Iliff for eight years until they moved to the Schaffer farm, where he farmed for 35 years before he retired and moved to Sterling. LaVerne so loved his years of farming.
LaVerne was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sterling and served as an elder and a deacon. He belonged to the Iliff Lions Club for many years. He was a director for the North Sterling Irrigation District for 16 years. He belonged to the Blizzard Snowmobile Club in Greeley for several years.
LaVerne is survived by his wife, Phyllis Hoier; children, Diana Maher of Hudson, Dan Hoier of Colorado Springs, Debbie Damm and husband Greg of Broadus, Mont.; grandchildren, Angela Maher, Amy Maher, Nicholas Hoier, Taylor Hoier, Dana Sutton and husband Douglas; brothers, Elmon Hoier and wife Darlene of Sun City, Ariz., Don Hoier and wife Patricia of Apple Valley, Calif., Kenneth Hoier and wife Shirley of Wheeling, W.V.; sister, Marian Powell and husband Richard of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two great- grandsons, Andrew Sutton and Adam Sutton of Billings, Mont.; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Minnetta Hoier; and grand parents, John and Bertha Japp and Jens and Amelia Hoier.
