  "FATHER OF TEN CHILDREN DIES JENS H.HOIER, 64, HAD CARED FOR CHILDREN SINCE WIFE DIED IN 1922 Jens Hansen Hoier, 64, of Kennard, father of three sons and seven daughters, who had cared for his children since their mother died in 1922, died Monday at his home southwest of Kennard. A short illness had preceded his death. Mr. Hoier, born in North Schleswig, Germany, on April 25, 1874, came to America with his parents at the age of eight. Since then he had lived in the Blair and Kennard vicinities. He was married to Amelia Nielsen, oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.S. Nielsen of Blair, on September 8, 1899. She died November 23, 1922, at the age of 40. Surviving Mr. Hoier are three sons, Leonard of Kennard, Edward of Crook, Colorado, and Elvin at home; seven daughters, Mrs. Alice Tarpening of Battle Creek, Nebraska, Mrs. Claude Walker of Watson, Missouri, Mrs. Fred Gottsch of Omaha, Mrs. Henry Luschen of Emerson, Mrs. Henry Braesh of Bennington, and Elna and Lillian at home.There are 13 grandchildren; also two sisters, Mrs. Katie Hoier and Mrs. Fritz Matthiesen, and two brothers, Andrew and Morten Hoier. Funeral services for Mr. Hoier are being held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Danish Lutheran church in Kennard. Dr. N.C. Carlsen of Blair will officiate and burial will follow in Blair cemetery. ( Published in Pilot Tribune on 25 August 1938) #2 "Jens Hansen Hoier was born at Oxenved, North Schleswig on April 25, 1874. At the age of eight he emigrated to America together with his parents. Ever since his arrival in this country he has lived in the vicinity of Blair and Kennard. On September 8, 1899, he was married to Amelia Nielsen, oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.S.Nieslen of Blair. To this union ten children were born. On August 22 he passed away after a short illness at the age of 63 years, 3 months and 22 days. His wife preceded him in death on November 23, 1922 at the age of forty years. He is survived by all of his children, three sons and seven daughters. His daughters are: Mrs. Alice Tarpening of Battle Creek, Nebraska; Mrs. Claude Walker, Watson, Missouri; Mrs. Fred Gottsch, Omaha, Nebraska; Mrs. Henry Luschen, Emerson, Nebraska; Mrs. Heny Broaesch, Bennington, Nebraska and Elna and Lillian at home. His sons are Leonard Hoier, of Kennard; Edward of Crook, Colorado; and Elvin at home. Surviving him are also 13 grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Katie Hoier and Mrs. Fritz Matthiesen and two brothers, Andrew and Morten. Mr. Hoise was a highly respected citizen, a good neighbor, a devoted husband and a loving and affectionate father. The remarkable way in which he reared his motherless children and kept them together since their mother's death is a matter of record for which he won the esteem of all who knew him. Mr. Hoier will be greatly missed, not only by his chldren but also by his many friends." (Published in Enterprise on 25 August 1938)
