- "Time has again taken toll of another old settler, one who has served his community in many ways. In business in Blair for a number of years as well as at Kennard, he formed a wide acquaintanceship, and was known for his honorable, upright life.
Mr. C. S. Nielsen was born on the 11th of March, 1860 at Vidstrup, Jutland, Denmark, and passed away at his home on North Walker Avenue in Blair April 2nd at the age of 78 years and 22 days.
Mr. Nielsen was united in marriage with Jorgine Nielsen in 1882, and in the same year they immigrated to America. To this union 9 children were born, two of these, namely Mrs. Jens Hoier and Minnie Nielsen, preceded him in death.
Those who survive are: his wife who is ill and six daughters: Mrs. Andrew Hoier, Mrs. Chris Gutschow, Mrs. Henry Petersen, Mrs. Thorvald Jorgensen, Mrs. Marion Stricklett, Mrs. Carl Graverhold, all of Blair Nebraska; one son, Chris E. Nielsen of Canton, South Dakota; 26 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren; also two sisters, Mrs. Christian Norgaard and Mrs. Christian Kjeldsen and one brother, Soren, all living in Denmark.
Mr. Nielsen first came to Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1882, then in 1884 moved to a farm near Kennard, and later started a meat market at Kennard. About 1897 he moved to Blair, and was in business here until his retirement in 1917. Mr. Neilsen took his family to Denmark in 1893, and remained there for four years. In 1910 he made another visit to his homeland.
Mr. Nielsen had been in poor health for about two years. He was very kind and patient during all his illness, and a very devoted father and husband.
Funeral services were held at his home Monday afternoon, with Rev. James N. Lund officiating. At the grave the Odd Fellow lodge, of which he was a member, had charge of the ceremonies.
