Nekrolog |
- Lieut. Col. Meir Engel, a Jewish chaplain on duty in South Vietnam, died there yesterday of a heart attack, according to word received here. His age was 50.
Colonel Engel, a veteran of World War II and the Korean war, had been assigned to Vietnam last August. After his arrival in Saigon, he organized a religious education program and distributed supplies and literature furnished by the National Jewish Welfare Board.
He was born in Israel, came to the United States in 1937 after receiving an M.A. degree from Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Five years later he was ordained a rabbi at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.
After serving for a brief period at Brith Shalom Community Center in Philadelphia, Colonel Engel joined the army as a chaplain and served in the Pacific. At the end of World War II, he returned to civilian life, serving congregations in Greensboro, N. C., and Beverly, Mass.
