- "Delbert H. Peterson, 89, of Brookings, died on Friday, July 19, 2013 at Edgewood Vista. Funeral services will be held at 10:30am Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitation will be held from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at Rude's Funeral Home in Brookings. Delbert H. Peterson was born on September 25, 1923 in Kingsbury County, SD, the son of Adolph and Anna (Anderson) Peterson. He was the sixth child of a family of twelve. Delbert received his education in rural school in Kingsbury County and was a graduate of Brookings High School. He served in the United States Navy from 1948 until his discharge in 1952 during the Korean Conflict. While in the military, he attended Machinist School in San Diego, CA. His first duty was in the Naval Base Pearl Harbor where he spent 27 months repairing ships that came into dock. He was discharged from the ship USS Frontier while he was in Japan. He was united in marriage to Mardell Thompson on December 26, 1952 in Brookings, SD. After their marriage they lived in Minneapolis, MN for one year where he worked as a machinist. Then, they moved back to South Dakota where they farmed in Brookings County until their retirement in 1979. He was a member of the Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings. Delbert enjoyed farming for 24 years and felt that he was put on earth to be a farmer. He enjoyed farming where he could plant his crops, raise his animals and watch them grow to maturity. He felt pride in raising crops and animals that provided healthy food for many families. Delbert was known for his pride in his Danish heritage, his love for his family, his genuine concern for others, his love of sweets, his good humor, and his great smile. Delbert is survived by his two daughters, Cindy Peterson and Diane Perry (Bryan) of Brookings, SD; three granddaughters, Katrina, Abbey and Jadyn; two sisters, Lorraine Schwiesow (William) of Beltsville, MD and Fern Allison (Lyle) of Brookings, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mardell, his six brothers Orville, Myron, Martin, Sigrud, Adolph, Norman and his three sisters Alpha Nussbaum, Rosella Greer, and Agnes Bartholomew."
