- "Allen "Al" Flitcraft, 95, of Wilmette, Illinois, peacefully passed away on July 19, 2022 at Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview, Illinois. Al was born on August 6, 1926 to Alice Blackburn and Harold Flitcraft in Oak Park, Illinois. He was the eldest of three siblings.
Fostering a sense of compassion in him from a young age, Al's family housed Ernst Turk, a Jew who had fled Germany, at their River Forest home in the early 1940s. As part of their Quaker heritage, the Flitcraft family was concerned for the disadvantaged, downtrodden and or prejudiced peoples of society.
Al graduated from Oak Park High School in 1944 then served in the United States Army from 1945 to 1946 where he was stationed in Hawaii at Fort Armstrong. There he was assigned to an inventory parts supply unit, for an ordinance repair depot for military vehicles. Following his service, he studied at the University of Illinois School of Business and graduated in 1950.
Later that year, he began his career with IBM in sales for the Electric Typewriter Division and retired in 1992 as CEO of TransUnion Credit Information Company.
He married the love of his life, Jane Hagelund, in 1952 and became an amazing father to two sons.
In addition to his compassion, successful career, and loving family, Al was widely known for his adventurous spirit and affinity for sports. In 1960 he obtained a pilot's license after training at Poughkeepsie, New York airport and purchased a single engine Cessna which he flew for 13 years.
Al owned two condos in Summit County, Colorado and skied until he was 85. From 1986-2005, he made 15 ocean sailing trips in the Caribbean, Bahamas, Mediterranean Sea, Pacific Ocean, Bora Bora, Adriatic Sea, and more. From 2001-2015, Al made 11 European biking trips (including in Normandy, Austria, Germany, and Northern Italy) with The Over-the-Hill Gang. He completed his last 7day bike trip at the age of 89.
Allen is survived by his wife, Jane (Hagelund) Flitcraft, his sons and their spouses, Gregg Flitcraft (Nancy) and Scott Flitcraft (Beth), five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Flitcraft and Alice (Blackburn) Flitcraft, his brother, Jack Flitcraft, and his sister, Joyce (Flitcraft) Zoellner.
A celebration of life will be held at Lake Forest Friends Meeting, 101 West Old Elm Road, Lake Forest, IL 60045, on October 1, 2022, at 2:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Allen Flitcraft's honor to The Nature
