| The little town of Juhl has all but vanished. The first settlers in the area were Danish who came here in 1881 and the village was soon named after one of the settlers, Jens C. Juhl. The town grew and became home to over one hundred Danish families; the town also had a church, general store/post office and school, with farming as the main occupation and source of income. The post office ran from 1889 until 1906; once it shut down, the town began it's decline. Nowadays all the businesses are go Juhl can be found to this day in Elmer Township, Sanilac County at the corner of Juhl & Frenchline Roads. It's lonesome & desolate but it may bring some good photo ops for ya | Juhl, Jens Christensen (I12590)

| The Maharal married Pearl at the age of 32 years old (when she was 28 years old). She was the industrious daughter of Samuel Shmelka Reich, one of the richest men in Prague. On the day of their engagement, a sudden fire broke out in Prague in which all the property of Rabbi Shmuel Reich went up in fire. Jews were accused of arson, and many Christians attacked Jewish homes. The Reich family’s now impoverished state led to attempts by various parties to sabotage the Maharal and Pearl’s marriage. The bride's father himself thought that the match should be cancelled, because he had signed on it when he was wealthy and now his situation had changed drastically. The Maharal’s family firmly refused to embarrass a worthy Jewish daughter, and said that they would trust in G-d to save the situation. Slowly, life returned to normal, Rabbi Shmuel got rich again, and the happy couple finally married. (Hachiman) Loren skriver, at han tillige var rabbiner i Prag. | Schmelkes, Shmuel (I1940)

| The Maharal's marriage to his wife Pearl was a very happy one, and they were blessed with seven children, six daughters and a son. All six daughters married into prominent Prague families. His son, Bezalel, became rabbi in Cologne, Germany, where he headed a rabbinical academy. The Maharal was deeply grieved when this son met an untimely death in 1600. His descendants include 7 generations of Rabbis. (Burstein) | Löw, Bezalel Charif (I1934)

| The Maharal's wife was known for her scholarship. She was so erudite that she proofread her husband's books for mistakes. Some say that she put on tefillin, like Bruriah, the wife of Rabbi Meir, and Michal the daughter of Saul. (Hachiman) Tefillin: "a set of small black leather boxes containing scrolls of parchment inscribed with verses from the Torah. They are worn by observant adult Jews during weekday morning prayers; historically and traditionally, this is a male obligation, and thus, only males within Orthodox Judaism perform this mitzvah, or commandment. Despite the latter, some women also choose to wear Tefillin for prayer, and are encouraged to do so by some.[1] The practice of women donning Tefillin is not simply a modern, feminist phenomenon, as there is evidence that Jewish women in Medieval France and Germany wore them." (Wikipedia) The Maharal's marriage to his wife Pearl has been surrounded by the Loew family chronicler, Meir Perles, with romance. The bride's father, a well known Prague merchant, suffered business reverses shortly after the couple was engaged. Thus he could not meet the terms of the financial arrangements in favor of the young couple, as had been stipulated. Thereupon he offered to cancel the engagement. The Maharal, however, was not interested in financial settlement and he persisted in his love for Pearl. There was a long delay in the wedding, while the bride established herself in a bakery shop in order to help support the family. The marriage finally occurred in 1544. Bride and groom, according to the same chronicler, were then 32 and 28 years old respectively. Their marriage was a very happy one, and they were blessed with seven children, six daughters and a son. All six daughters married into prominent Prague families. His son, Bezalel, became rabbi in Cologne, Germany, where he headed a rabbinical academy. The Maharal was deeply grieved when this son met an untimely death in 1600. The Maharal's public career took him to many parts of Central and Eastern Europe, but his heart was always in Prague, the home of his wife's family and of his own children. (Burstein) Not the daughter of Schmelkes, according to recent scholarship. A. Putik and D. Polakovic (2009) 'Judah Loew ben Bezalel, Called Maharal * A study on his genealogy and biography', in P. Demetz (ed) Path of Life. Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel ca. 1525*1609, Academia, Prague, pp29-83. Disagreement about the year of birth - 1516 vs. 1528 (according to Judith Nathan's data). According to another version, Pearl was the daughter of Rabbi Yitzchak Klober of Worms ? (Burstein) | Schmelkes, Perla (I1933)

| The present Pinchas Schul building is the work of the Horowitz family. In 1535 Aaron Meshulam Horowitz (a very wealthy leader of the community) had it built between his house and the site of the Old Jewish Cemetery. After the Second World War, the synagogue was turned into a Memorial to the Jews of Bohemia and Moravia murdered by the Nazis. On its walls are inscribed the names of the Jewish victims, their personal data, and the names of the communities to which they belonged. (Burstein) | Horowitz, Aaron Avraham Meshulam Zalman (I1977)

| There is an early tombstone in Bettenhausen (B119) of a Moshe Baruch ben Moshe Jehuda Segal. The date cannot be read anymore. Next to him lies Röschen, housewife of ... who died in 1647. The name of her husband is illegible now, but the proximity strongly suggests that she is Moshe Baruch’s wife. The early date suggests that Moshe Baruch is no one else but Benedict Goldschmidt. Moreover, on the tombstone of his son Abraham (Bettenhausen B442b) Benedict is also called Moses Baruch. Apparently, he went through another change of name after a serious illness. Most probably, his father’s name is Jehuda, to which Moses was appended after an illness. (Schelleken) | Levy, Baruch Daniel Samuel Goldschmidt Stuckert (I1723)

| They had 2 children: Paul Hartog Cohen (Emden, December 30, 1924 - Gorinchem, October 5, 1991) and Hedwig. The parents were arrested during their Kristallnacht in their German residence Emden. Ella was released soon, Benni first spent some time in a camp before being allowed to return home. Mother Ella died in 1939. Benni tried to get Paul and Hedwig to the Netherlands, but the border was closed in the meantime. A petition from his Dutch relative Heiman Cohen to Queen Wilhelmina to admit his nephew and niece did help. In January 1939 they were placed in a children's home in Wijk aan Zee and four months later in the Dutch Israelite Orphanage in The Hague. ... After a while, first Hedwig and then Paul also went to family in Deventer. In 1942 they were collected together and taken to a building in Deventer. However, they were able to leave that building unscathed and then went into hiding. ... His sister Hedwig went into hiding in Friesland during the war and escaped the Holocaust there. She died in Deventer in 2012. (J oodsmonument zaanstreek). | Cohen, Hedwig (I9411)
