41277 Pia Bjerregaard April 11, 1945 ~ November, 23, 2003
Well-known Meeker resident Pia Bjerregaard, 58, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction.
Pia was born April 11, 1945, in Copenhagen, Denmark, the daughter of August and Eva Susanna (Linder Madsen) Bjerregaard. As a young girl her love for animals blossomed as she began riding lessons in Copenhagen.
Her family moved to Fredrikssund and she received her first horse. She began traveling to riding schools in Denmark, Sweden and Germany. Between the ages of 14 and 19 she trained with the European National Equestrian Olympic Team where she furthered her love of animals that she carried with her throughout her life. At the age of 19 she had the opportunity to travel to Meeker at the invitation of Soren Nielsen. She visited the Nielsen ranch up the river and fell in love with ranch life. Following her March 7, 1967, wedding in Denmark to Grant Nielsen, she returned to her new American home.
Pia’s passion then turned to her three children as she dedicated herself to their various activities. She led 4-H horse, dog and sheep programs for several years while attending to her own horse business where she bred and raised Arabians and Quarter horses. On the side, Pia enjoyed teaching riding lessons. Even as busy as her life had become, she still found the time to enjoy and appreciate the beauty of Colorado’s sunsets and scenery.
Pia also started an antique store featuring European antiques. Starting in 1987, Pia worked off and on at both Pioneers Hospital and the Meeker Family Health Center. She was devoted to her work and her family, spending countless hours with her grandchildren and children. She loved the outdoors and trips to the mountains. She also enjoyed raising goats, cows, horses and her border collies.
Survivors include three children, Ann Marie Nielsen and her fiancée Gene Scritchfield, Alan Nielsen and his wife Becca, Kent Nielsen and his wife Marci all of Meeker, six grandchildren, Mason, Tristan, Daylon, Derek, Denee and Kaysyn and two brothers, Hans and Frank, both of Denmark.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 29 at the Fairfield Community Center. Interment was made at the Nielsen Ranch on the Mesa.
Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the Pia Bjerregaard Memorial Fund at any First National Bank of the Rockies. Cochran Memorial Chapel was entrusted with the funeral arrangements.

41290 Pioneer Alaska resident Howard C. Thew, 79, died March 2 at Providence Hospital. A funeral was at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2501 Maplewood St., with visitation beginning. Bishop Steven Henderson of the Anchorage Second Ward officiated. Burial was in the Pioneers Section of Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery in the spring.
Mr. Thew was born Sept. 8, 1914, in Hayden, Ariz., a small mining town, where he spent his early years. He was a small-business man in Los Angeles during the 1940s and owned a chain of full-service gas stations and tire stores. In 1950, he declared he was tired of the "rat race" and loaded up a truck and drove to Alaska. When he arrived in Tok Junction, he flipped a coin to determine if he was going to Anchorage or Fairbanks. Anchorage won. Mr. Thew lost his Turnagain home to the 1964 earthquake. He was present on Fourth Avenue during the quake and watched businesses and the street itself drop 10 feet. Since 1967, Mr. Thew had been a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and an avid small-boat sailor. For years, he actively promoted small-boat safety in Anchorage. Most years, he performed more courtesy motorboat examinations, one of the auxiliary's primary safety programs, than any other member of the auxiliary in the 17th Coast Guard District in Alaska. He won the district's award for the most examinations conducted so often that the Coast Guard named their award after him. He continued to win the Howard C. Thew Award. As a local small-business man, Mr. Thew regularly sponsored youth and community activities, including youth sports teams and individual competitors in the Soap Box Derby. He owned and operated Howard's Chevron Service at Fourth Avenue and A Street for 30 years. He also owned many apartment houses in Anchorage and retired from the service station business in 1980. Mr. Thew had been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 1990. He was an active and founding member of the Alaska Landlords Association. For many years, he was active in the Republican Party. Mr. Thew was well-known for his interest in Alaska history and memorabilia. He was an avid gardener and won community awards for flower displays in his yard. He also enjoyed fishing and small boating.
Mr. Thew is survived by his wife, J. Juanita Thew of Anchorage; sons, Howard Jr. of Gardnerville, Nev., and Lt. Col. Kent Thew of Fort Richardson; daughter, Susan Thew Bedel of Los Angeles; and his grandson, Ian Thew of Fort Richardson. Memorials may be sent to the Alaska Heart Association (Anchorage Daily News March 6, 1994, i Gind a Grave)
