    "Funeral services for Tim Engelke, 82, of Blair, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at First Lutheran Church, with interment in the Blair Cemetery. Mr. Engelke died Friday, Oct. 26, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair.
    Virgil Charles Engelke was born May 17, 1919, at Blair to George and Marietta (Stricklett) Engelke. He attended Blair High School.
    On Dec. 30, 1942, he married Erna Gutschow in Blair. In 1942, he enlisted in the Navy and served during World War II. He was discharged in 1945.
    Mr. Engelke worked at the Gambles Store in Blair from 1952 to 1967. He was a member of the Blair American Legion and V.F.W. and the First Lutheran Church.
    He is survived by his wife, Erna, son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Elaine Engelke, daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Jim Custard, all of Blair, six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one sister, Georgia Nelson of Montana, numberous nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by two sisters, June Woodring and Helen Uehling, and by one brother, Bill Engelke."

    "Erna M. Engelke, 87, of Blair, died Saturday, May 15, 2010, in Omaha.
    Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, at First Lutheran Church in Blair. Interment will be in the Blair Cemetery.
    Erna M. Gutschow was born Dec. 27, 1922, in Blair to Chris F. and Marie (Nielsen) Gutschow.
    When she was still in her teens, her first job was as a clerk in charge of the candy counter at the Ben Franklin store in downtown Blair. This may have been her most favorite job because she very much enjoyed chocolate.
    She married Virgil C. "Tim" Engelke on Dec. 30, 1942, when he returned home on leave from the United States Navy during World War II.
    As her children and their friends were growing up, her home became very popular in the neighborhood as she stayed very busy creating a place where everyone around her knew they were loved. When her children wee older, she worked at the Blair Bakery and J. M. McDonald's clothing store until the mid 1970s when she stopped working due to her husband's health.
    She loved cooking, baking and crocheting, as well as visiting with much loved friends and family whenever possible. She had a very strong and unwavering faith in God as her foundation and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
    She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Elaine Engelke; daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Jim Custard, all of Blair; six grandchildren, Tim Mann, John Mann, Bridgette Kyral, Peggy Sue Suddick, Lori Wolff, Jill Jensen; 10 great-grandchildren, Marshall Suddick, Tom Wolff, Haley Suddick, Noelle Kyral, Emma Wolff, Paige Kyral, Joshua Suddick, Lance Jensen, Mason Mann, Wyatt Walker; sister, Catherine Giesselmann of Fremont; brother and sister-in-law, Chris and Kay Gutschow of Fremont.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Tim; infant grandson; infant granddaughter; infant great-grandson; sisters, Jennie, Beulah and Margaret; and brothers, Fred and Bill."

    Chris Frank Gutschow died September 19th at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair. He was born September 24, 1878, to Chris and Catherine Gutschow.
    His wife, Marie Nielsen Gutschow, passed away August 20th of this year.
    He is survived by three sons, Fred of Blair, Chris of Fremont and Wilford of Scribner; four daughters, Mrs. Beulah Johnson of Scribner, Mrs. Margaret Metzler of Oakland, Mrs. Erna Engelke of Blair and Mrs. Merle Gieselman of Arlington. Also two sisters, Mrs. Ed Hansen and Kate Gutschow, both of Blair.
    Mr. Gutschow was a retired farmer.
    Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon, September 22, at the Trinity Lutheran Church at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. Norman Discher will officiate. The Campbell Mortuary is in charge of arrangements and burial will be in the Blair Cemetery."

    "he departed, Chris Frank Gutschow, son of Chris Gutschow Sr. and his wife Kate Biffar, was born at Blair, Nebraska on September 24, 1878.
    November 15, 1907 he was united in holy wedlock to Marie Nielsen at Council Bluffs, Iowa. After their marriage they lived 4-1/2 miles north of Blair on a farm until they retired in 1946. They have lived in Blair since then. The Lord blessed this marriage with 5 daughters and 3 sons.
    Mr. Gutschow was in failing health during the past year. Following the death of his loving wife a month ago he became seriously ill and was a patient in the local hospital for the last weeks. Although everything humanly possible was done for him, and although he received the best of care, the Lord in his wisdom, called him from this vale of tears last Thursday, September 19 at the age of 84 years, 11 months, and 26 days.

    Mrs. Chris Gutschow, well-known Blair woman, died at Memorial Community Hospital Tuesday, August 20th. She was 72 years old.

    Mrs. Gutschow was born at Kennard on October 5, 1890 and spent all of her life in this area. For many years she and her husband engaged in farming, and they operated a place north of Blair on the bottoms where their family was raised. Since retiring from the farm, they have lived at 2053 Davis Avenue in Blair.

    Mrs. Gutschow is survived by her husband and by seven children, all of whom live near Blair. They are: Fred Gutschow, of Blair; Mrs. Clifford Johnson (Beulah) of Scribner; Mrs. Glen Metzler (Margaret) of Oakland; Wilford Gutschow, of Scribner; Mrs. Tim Engelke (Erna) of Blair; Chris Gutschow, Jr., of Fremont; and Mrs. Merle Giesselman, of Arlington.

    Four sisters survive. They are Mrs. Carl Graverholt, Mrs. Henry Petersen, Mrs. Marion Stricklett and Mrs. Thorvald Jorgensen, all of Blair. A brother, Chris Nielsen, lives at Huron, South Dakota.

    Also surviving are 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

    Funeral services will be held Friday, August 23rd, at Trinity Lutheran Church at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. Norman Discher will conduct the service and the Campbell Mortuary will direct the interment in the Blair Cemetery.

    "Time has again taken toll of another old settler, one who has served his community in many ways. In business in Blair for a number of years as well as at Kennard, he formed a wide acquaintanceship, and was known for his honorable, upright life.
    Mr. C. S. Nielsen was born on the 11th of March, 1860 at Vidstrup, Jutland, Denmark, and passed away at his home on North Walker Avenue in Blair April 2nd at the age of 78 years and 22 days.
    Mr. Nielsen was united in marriage with Jorgine Nielsen in 1882, and in the same year they immigrated to America. To this union 9 children were born, two of these, namely Mrs. Jens Hoier and Minnie Nielsen, preceded him in death.
    Those who survive are: his wife who is ill and six daughters: Mrs. Andrew Hoier, Mrs. Chris Gutschow, Mrs. Henry Petersen, Mrs. Thorvald Jorgensen, Mrs. Marion Stricklett, Mrs. Carl Graverhold, all of Blair Nebraska; one son, Chris E. Nielsen of Canton, South Dakota; 26 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren; also two sisters, Mrs. Christian Norgaard and Mrs. Christian Kjeldsen and one brother, Soren, all living in Denmark.
    Mr. Nielsen first came to Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1882, then in 1884 moved to a farm near Kennard, and later started a meat market at Kennard. About 1897 he moved to Blair, and was in business here until his retirement in 1917. Mr. Neilsen took his family to Denmark in 1893, and remained there for four years. In 1910 he made another visit to his homeland.
    Mr. Nielsen had been in poor health for about two years. He was very kind and patient during all his illness, and a very devoted father and husband.
    Funeral services were held at his home Monday afternoon, with Rev. James N. Lund officiating. At the grave the Odd Fellow lodge, of which he was a member, had charge of the ceremonies.

    "Mrs. Jorgine Sofie Nielsen passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Marion Stricklett on Saturday, January 20, 1940 following a serious illness. She was 76 years, 7 months and 21 days old at the time of her death.
    Mrs. Nielsen was born at Hjorring, Denmark, on April 29, 1863. In 1882 she was married to Christen S. Nielsen, the wedding taking place in Denmark, and in the same year the couple came to America. They lived for a time in Council Bluffs and later moved to Kennard; in 1893 they returned to their native land for a four year term of residence.
    Upon their return to Washington County in 1897, Mr. Nielsen established a business in Blair which he continued until his retirement in 1917. Mr. Nielsen passed away in 1938, and since that time Mrs. Nielsen had resided at the Stricklett home.
    Surviving Mrs. Nielsen are six daughters, Mrs. Andrew (Amelia) Hoier, Mrs. Chris (Marie) Gutschow, Mrs. Henry (Sophie) Petersen, Mrs. Thorvald (Elizabeth) Jorgensen, Mrs. Marion (Anna) Stricklett and Mrs. Carl (Jorgine N) Graverholdt, all of Blair; one son, Chris E. Nielsen, of Canton, South Dakota; twenty-five great-grandchildren, and twenty-six grandchildren.
    Services were held at the Marion Stricklett home on north Walker Avenue at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. Harold C. Jorgensen, pastor of the First Lutheran Church, in charge."
