    "Harold "Buzz" Hortness, age 69, of Armour, SD, died Saturday, January 31, 2015, at the United Living Community in Brookings, SD. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 16, at Peever Lutheran Church in Peever, SD. Visitation will be at the church one hour preceding the service. Harold "Buzz" Hortness was born in Graceville, MN, on December 4, 1945, to Harold and Viola (Nelson) Hortness. He grew up and attended school in Peever, graduating high school in 1963. Buzz attended Huron College and graduated from General Beadle State College in 1967. That summer he married Eloise Hansen in Summit. The fall of 1967 he began coaching and teaching at Pierpont High School, followed by a longer stint coaching and teaching junior high science in Webster. He refereed numerous basketball games, sold insurance for a time, and most recently lived in Armour, SD, area, where he retired from Mid-River Pork in 2007. Buzz enjoyed fishing, playing cards, telling jokes and stories, gardening, outdoor seasonal decorating, and sharing sports trivia. Sports were his passion: the Vikings, SDSU basketball and football, Dakota State baseball, and most especially the Minnesota Twins. He was particularly proud of being listed in the SD amateur baseball record book for several pitching accomplishments and of being selected to officiate at numerous SD state high school basketball tournaments. Survivors include three daughtersLori Lahr of Sioux Falls, Missy Hortness (Jason Hammer) of Webster, and Kelly (Jerad) Rouge of Tyler, MN; ex-wife Eloise Hortness of Webster; four grandsonsJayden Hortness, Hunter Lahr, Griffin and Cooper Rouge; and siblings Mary (Jerry) Fiedler of Brookings, Margie (Mike) Frank of Norfolk, NE, and Joel (Bonnie) Hortness of Peever.     "I don't know what Peter did between the time he came here in 1883 until he homesteaded in 1895. I have been told that some of the immigrants stayed around New York for awhile before coming out west. They needed a sponsor to come over here. Whether he was there, I don't know. He did work for about a year for a farmer not to far from where he homesteaded.
    He got his naturalization papers July 7, 1883. This is registered at the South Dakota Historical Society, Cultural Heritage Center, Pierre, South Dakota, Book 168, Page 88. It was a two step program and hr got his 2nd papers July 1895 as recorded in Book 170, Page 107. He was naturalized as "Peter Jensen".
    He homesteaded as Peter Jensen. This is recorded in Book 5 of Patents Page 216, Brookings County Courthouse, Register of Deeds, Brookings, South Dakota. The couple lived on the farm near White, South Dakota from 1895 until 1938.
    I remember growing up in that house on the farm with my parents, brother and grandparents all living there. Peter lost the farm during the depression, eventually my dad (Elmer) bought it back from the Insurance company that had it at the time.
    Peter was a blacksmith, farmer and had his own threshing machine. He would do harvesting for different neighbors. I know they had to both work hard with none of the conveniences we have now. She washed clothes on a washboard and churned their own butter. They were more self sufficient then we are now.
    They moved to the town of White, South Dakota when they retired. I would stay there at times. She was a special grandmother. She was also known as the religious one of the family." (Evelyn Heiden).

    Another pair of Brookings county pioneers, Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Peterson, this week will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Peterson, who homesteaded on a farm in Argo township, 11 miles north and two miles east of Brookings in 1888. Both were born in Denmark.

    Peter J. Petersen
    Argo - Peter J. Peterson was born in Hundelen, Denmark, Dec 24, 1964. He came to the United States in 1883. Several years later he began farming in Argo township.
    In 1888 he was married to Anna Marie Heilesen. They then homesteaded on the farm where 50 years later they celebrated their golden wedding. Five years ago they moved to White.
    He is survived by his wife and five children, three daughters and two sons, namely: Mrs. Fawn Richardson of Albany, Oregon, Mrs. Holger Hartness of Peever, Mrs. Frank Behrend of Brookings and Stanley and Elmer Peterson of White. He is also survived by one brother Thomas of Denmark and Mrs. Marie Rishoi of Brookings, and 15 grandchildren and eight great grandschildren besides nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
    Mt Petersn was baptized in the Lutheran faith to which he remained steadfast. He was one of Brooking County's oldest pioneers. He passed away at Hendricks hospital June 1 at the age of 81 years, 5 months and 7 days. Had he lived until June 8, Mr. and Mrs. Peterson would have celebated their fifty-fifth wedding anniversary.
    Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon at the Evans residence and at the Danish Lutheran church in Argo township with Rev. F.G. Reuter officiating.
    For many years Mr. Peterson was caretaker of this church. Burial wa made in the cemetery on the church grounds.
    Pallbearers were George Madsen, Henry Thompsen, John Wagner, Alfred Christensen, Nels Christensen and Chris Thompsen.
    Those from a distance attending the funeral were Mrs. Fawn Richardsen of Albany, Ore., Mr. and Mrs. Holger Hartness, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hartness and Mary, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Hartness and Eugene, Mr. and Mrs. Miller Peterson, Miss Chilson and Jack Kelly of Peever, Roy Rishoi of Arlington, and Mrs. Donald Remund of Wilkot."
